The front page has a cute article about VW restoring a woman’s Beetle shes owned since new. They did a full on, super complete restoration and that made me think... Is it still “Annie”? (The car’s name)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Thoughts?

“Is it still Annie?” Ship of Theseus .
Legally, if it’s still the same VIN, it’s still the same car. honestly, this would land in the restomod category - and lots of people do restomods.

I do love a good Ship of Theseus paradox. Given the paradox part I’m not aware of there being a “correct” answer. But it can be decided on an individual basis.
I’ve thought about this in deciding what I want to do with my Mustang in the future, since getting rid of it isn’t an emotionally acceptable answer to me. I really want to either turn it into a cheap race car (LeMons/Chumpcar maybe?), or do a full rebuild on it. But either way it’s tearing apart the car I currently know. I figure if it’s a race car it’s just living its best life. And if I do a full rebuild, whatever it loses in “originality” it gains in having more of my own work in it.

Ahh, I wasn’t aware of that one until now.
Legally, yes, it is the same car. But emotionally ?

Yeah I think doing it yourself and bit by bit means the car is still the same car, but sending it off and getting it back some time later... I guess there isn’t that continuity of consciousness .

Well we humans replace most of our cells every 7 years anyways. Are we still us?

“This is my grandfather’s axe. My father replaced the handle and I replaced the head”
But, in all seriousness, most of the cells in the human body are replaced every decade or so(the 7-10 years thing people like to quote isn’t exactly true, every different type of cell is replaced at a different rate and there are some cells in the brain that are never replaced and some in the heart that are replaced so slowly that a lot last your entire life etc) but just because most of a human has been ‘rebuilt’ doesn’t make them someone else. But also I do agree, at what point is a machine no longer the same machine, especially when everything is replaced at once like this and not gradually over time.

If you still think it’s the same car, the memories are there, it’s good enough.

A car is just parts anyway.
